Lawn Care in Kenton

A crossroads laid out in 1796, with old shade trees over new lots.

Kenton sits where Route 42 meets Route 300, about six miles from Smyrna. Philip Lewis laid the village out in 1796, and it went by Lewis Crossroads until it took the name Kenton in 1806, according to the town and its National Register nomination. The 9.16-acre Kenton Historic District, listed in 1983, runs along both sides of Commerce Street from Main Street to the railroad tracks. Most of its houses date from the 1870s and 1880s, the oldest are brick from the late 1700s, some lots hold two houses, and one 1780s house still has its outbuildings clustered close by.

Kenton is small. Census estimates put it at about 355 people in 109 homes, and its 19955 ZIP area counts about the same, so this page is about the town itself (ACS 2024 via Census Reporter). The homes split into two eras: about 31 percent were built before 1960 and half in 2000 or later, 39 percent since 2010. The town's 2016 plan describes many mature trees across both home lots and institutional grounds. Fall here means heavy leaf drop on the old lots, while the newer ones still have young beds and plantings to fill out.

The ground drains well. The town plan maps almost all of Kenton as Hambrook sandy loam or urban land, well drained on slopes of 0 to 5 percent, and places the town outside the 100-year floodplain. The weather is rougher. Federal storm records show 3 to 4 inches of rain around Kenton Hundred on July 31, 2011, most of it within an hour, then 3.98 inches in Kenton two weeks later. They also list trees knocked down in town in May 2007 and a tree on the wires in April 2016, and in the February 2010 blizzard, three barns west of Kenton collapsed.

Yard upkeep in Kenton runs through outside partners. The 2016 plan says private companies collect refuse, and that weeds and grass enforcement goes through a 2014 agreement with Kent County, whose code sets 12 inches as the most grass and weeds may grow. In August 2019 the town council set a per-hour charge for any yard the town has to mow or trim itself after five days. The same minutes noted shrubs, vines and briars creeping onto the ball field behind Town Hall, the former schoolhouse whose park backs onto the Clayton-Easton rail trail corridor.

07 / FAQ

Kenton lawn care questions, answered.

Kenton's 2016 plan says private companies, not the town, provide refuse collection, so yard waste depends on your own hauler. Our spring and fall cleanups clear leaves out of lawns and beds, and our brush and small tree removal takes limbs, vines and storm debris off the property, so nothing sits in the yard waiting for a pickup.

The town's 2016 plan says owners in the National Register district face no extra restrictions on changes unless federal money, such as tax credits, is involved, and it encourages a call to the State Historic Preservation Office before modifications. Mulch, stone, shrubs and flower beds go in around an 1870s or 1880s house without touching the house itself.

Under a 2014 agreement described in the town's 2016 plan, Kent County handles weeds and grass enforcement, and the county code sets the limit at 12 inches. Kenton's council added its own charge in 2019 for yards the town has to mow or trim after five days. A steady mowing schedule keeps a lawn clear of both.

Mowing and edging, landscaping and new beds, block retaining walls, decorative stone and mulch, brush removal, and seasonal cleanups. If it's outside, just ask.

Yes. We dig out and level the base, set the block, and backfill so the wall stays straight. Then we can finish the bed with stone, mulch, and plants.

Yes. Snow removal is on our sign right next to mowing and landscaping. We clear driveways, walks and steps after a storm. Call or text (302) 244-2121 before the first snow so we know where you are.

Smyrna and Clayton, plus Cheswold, Kenton, Leipsic, Hartly, Townsend, Odessa and Middletown. If you are a little further out, call or text (302) 244-2121 and ask.

Yes. Small tree removal and brush removal are both on our sign. We cut out small trees, thick brush and vines and haul it all away. A big tree near the house or the power lines is a job for a tree service, and we will tell you if yours is one.

Yes. Clippings, leaves, brush and old mulch leave with us, and we blow off the walks and the driveway before we go.

Yes. We edge play areas with a border and fill them with fresh gravel, like the playset area in our gallery.
