Lawn Care in Cheswold

Named for a stand of chestnut trees, now mostly yards planted since 2000.

Cheswold is a young town wrapped around an old railroad crossroads. The 2024 American Community Survey, as tabulated by Census Reporter, counts 844 homes inside town limits; 86 percent went up in 2000 or later, and nearly half date from 2010 on. The town's 2020 comprehensive plan explains the jump. Parkers Run and Stonington broke ground in the early 2000s boom and stalled after the 2007 crash. Building came back in 2015, when single-family permits jumped from about 4 a year to 31. The oldest blocks are in Old Town, around Main and Commerce Streets and School Lane.

The grass rule is written down and it is strict. Cheswold's Grass Maintenance Ordinance makes it unlawful to let grass or weeds pass six inches, with vegetables, trees, shrubs and flowers excepted. After a written notice, an owner has 10 days before the town can send someone to cut it and bill the cost. The same ordinance says clippings that land on the sidewalk or street must be picked up the day the lawn is mowed. Cheswold sits in the Leipsic River watershed, which the comprehensive plan says DNREC found impaired by high nitrogen and phosphorus, so we blow every clipping back onto the turf.

The 1888 name came from a stand of chestnut trees by the depot, and trees still come with the lot by rule. The land use ordinance has developers plant at least two trees on every new lot before the certificate of occupancy, plus a street tree every 30 feet on town streets. The grass ordinance says trees may not block sidewalks, overhead wires or signs, or reach past the property line. Delaware's soil map puts the middle of town on Hambrook sandy loam, which drains well. We mulch those young trees, edge their beds and take down the small ones that outgrow their spot.

NOAA's storm log records a June 2008 squall line that dropped a large tree onto a Cheswold home, a tree and wires down near Hickory Ridge Road in July 2020, and two more rounds of downed trees nearby that August. Winter runs on a clock. The snow ordinance gives anyone with a sidewalk on a public street eight daylight hours after the snow stops to clear it, or salt it if that is impractical. Snow cannot go onto the street, block the view on a corner lot, or bury a hydrant. The January 25, 2026 storm left 9.6 inches of snow and sleet in Smyrna, five miles north.

07 / FAQ

Cheswold lawn care questions, answered.

Six inches. The Grass Maintenance Ordinance makes it unlawful to let grass or weeds grow higher, not counting vegetables, trees, shrubs and flowers. After a written notice, the owner has 10 days before the town can have the yard cut and charge the cost. Each day past the notice counts as a separate offense, so a regular mowing schedule is the simple fix.

Maybe not for mowing. A home listing in Nobles Pond, the age-defined community on the west side of Commerce Street, says the HOA covers front, rear and side lawn care plus snow removal. Ask your HOA what it leaves to owners before you book anything. Elsewhere in town, if the yard work falls to you, we handle the mowing, beds and winter clearing.

The town's 2013 trash ordinance says limbs or shrubbery set out on a regular trash day must be cut into four-foot lengths and bundled, and yard waste cannot sit on the sidewalk or street. It also has each owner arrange pickup with a private hauler. We cut up fallen limbs, take down small damaged trees with our compact tractor and haul the brush away.

Mowing and edging, landscaping and new beds, block retaining walls, decorative stone and mulch, brush removal, and seasonal cleanups. If it's outside, just ask.

Yes. We dig out and level the base, set the block, and backfill so the wall stays straight. Then we can finish the bed with stone, mulch, and plants.

Yes. Snow removal is on our sign right next to mowing and landscaping. We clear driveways, walks and steps after a storm. Call or text (302) 244-2121 before the first snow so we know where you are.

Smyrna and Clayton, plus Cheswold, Kenton, Leipsic, Hartly, Townsend, Odessa and Middletown. If you are a little further out, call or text (302) 244-2121 and ask.

Yes. Small tree removal and brush removal are both on our sign. We cut out small trees, thick brush and vines and haul it all away. A big tree near the house or the power lines is a job for a tree service, and we will tell you if yours is one.

Yes. Clippings, leaves, brush and old mulch leave with us, and we blow off the walks and the driveway before we go.

Yes. We edge play areas with a border and fill them with fresh gravel, like the playset area in our gallery.
